Margao city, the capital and the chief town of South Goa, is an important commercial town in south Goa having a rich history. The Math of the Vaishnavas was first established here. Being a home to the mathas of the Vaishnavas, the place was earlier called Matha Grama, which changed to Madgaon through local dialects. Later, when the Portuguese arrived in Goa, they renamed the city Margao.
Today, Margao city is famous as the commercial center of southern Goa and attracts tourists from all over the world to showcase its distinctive ancient cultural heritage and the conventional customs. The major attractions at Margao - the nearby Colva beach, The Old Market, and Holy Spirit church.
The church of the Holy Spirit in Margao city built by the Portuguese in 1675 A.D. is one of the finest examples of late-baroque architecture in Goa. The interiors of the church are decorated with gilt crystal and stucco.
Reaching Margao
By Air
The Dabolim Airport in Vasco is the nearest airport to Margao and located at a distance of 15 kms. from the city. Travelers usually hire a cab from the airport to reach the city or nearby beaches.
By Road
You can avail private bus service from the Margao's main square. The Kadamba bus stand is located just outside the city and delivers services for long distance routes. It is also the departure point for interstate services to Mangalore, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune.
By Rail
The Margao railway station is a major railway terminal in south Goa and is only 2 km from the city center. All trains passing through Goa compulsorily halt here.
