The Basilica of Bom Jesus is located in Old Goa and is a UNESCO world heritage site. This church holds the mortal remains of St Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa .
Built in 1605, it is one of the oldest churches in Goa. The floor is of marble with elaborate gilded altars. The church is adorned with paintings of scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier. The church has a mausoleum which holds the silver casket with the body of St. Francis Xavier.This casket is brought down for public viewing and veneration every 10 years. During this time thousands of devotees flock the place with great faith believing in the miraculous powers of the saint.
A large number of devotees attend the novenas held every year before the feast which is a grand celebration on the 3rd of December.
