Ganesh Chaturthi or chovoth as its known in Goa is an important festival among the Goan Hindus. This festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm, with clay models of Lord Ganesha being worshipped according to the vows made in the family. There is a lot of excitement in the families with preparations to welcome Lord Ganesha. A matoli is set up at the sacred place where the idol will be worshipped with pujas, bhajans and aartis. Sweets such as neuri, modak and other savories are prepared as an offering. Also special vegetarian meals are cooked.

The idol is worshipped as per the traditions of the family and then taken out in a procession accompanied by cymbals and drums to be immersed in the sea, well, river or pond to the chanting of prayers while looking forward to the next year when Lord Ganesha will visit them again.
